The cartesian plane is a visual representation for pairs of numbers (x,y) as a point on a plane. The x-coordinate is represented by the horizontal position of the point, and the y-coordinate by its vertical position.

The horizontal and vertical positions are measured by comparing the position of the point to the coordinate axes. The coordinate axes intersect at the origin (0,0).
