    Polynomials (Lesson 2/4)

    Polynomial division, factors and remainders

    1 / 20

    Discussion

    (a)

    Expand the product (x+2)(x2−3).

    Solution:

Think of letting each part in the first bracket “meet” everything in the second bracket, then tidying up.

    (x+2)(x2−3)=x(x2−3)+2(x2−3)
    =x3−3x+2x2−6

    Now write in descending powers:

    x3+2x2−3x−6
